About Us

Our Mission

Rescuing and finding forever families for unwanted, neglected, abused, and homeless dogs.

Our Story

It all began when I rescued my first dog.  A Catahoula mix named Dixie, known affectionately by many as “Dixie Girl”.  Hence the name of this organization. Dixie was an emaciated adult dog hit previously by a car and who had not stepped foot in a house prior to her rescue.  She stopped my heart the minute I saw her and changed my world forever.  Since her rescue, she has been my best friend showing unconditional love through the thick and thin of every aspect of my life.  I feel everyone should experience the kind of love Dixie and I feel for each other, and since that day, my passion and empathy for abandoned, forgotten dogs has consumed my life.

It all began when I rescued my first dog.  A Catahoula mix named Dixie, known affectionately by many as “Dixie Girl”.  Hence the name of this organization. Dixie was an emaciated adult dog with a limp that found herself back at a rural shelter twice. I adopted her while in college and she changed my life forever. Dixie was my best friend from 2006-2020 showing unconditional love through the thick and thin of every aspect of my life. I feel everyone should experience the kind of love Dixie. Since then, my passion and empathy for abandoned, forgotten dogs has consumed my life.

Founded in 2018, Dixie Girl Dog Rescue (DGDR) is a registered 501(3) non-profit rescue for dogs of all ages and breeds and some cats. As articulated in our Mission Statement: “Dixie Girl Dog Rescue is dedicated to finding forever families for unwanted, neglected, abused, and homeless dogs. Most organizations are willing to acquire healthy, young puppies, and while we do the same, we are here for the dogs who need a little extra help, including the mangy, sick, “broken”, broken-hearted, those who have been abandoned, left behind, and thrown away. What makes DGDR unique is our willingness to commit to dogs from any situation, non-discriminate of breed or medical status. We are solely a foster-based rescue, and work hard to find committed fosters to care for and acclimate dogs into a loving home environment during their vetting process The DGDR team side by side with their foster family works diligently to place animals into appropriate, permanent, loving, and responsible homes. Each adopter goes through a comprehensive adoption process including an application, interview, vet and reference checks to ensure they are a great match for each animal individually.

Dixie Girl Dog Rescue is based out of Birmingham, Alabama. Our animals can be adopted by families locally and across the United States. DGDR has a private transport van and is Licensed to adopt and transport to Rhode Island. We partner with a wonderful PetSmart in Warwick, RI where we send our pre-adopted animals on frequent transports. All of the animals in our care are fully vetted prior to adoption. Their medical care includes spay/neuters, all age appropriate vaccines, preventatives and tests and in most cases additional vet care is needed including but not limited to: heartworm treatment, amputations, dental procedures, bloodwork, entropion surgery, treatment of severe skin conditions and infections. All Dixie Girl animals are microchipped and registered to their new families but also the rescue in a case of an emergency. We make lifelong commitments to all of our animals.

All donations are 100% tax-deductible and go directly to the care and needs of our animals. Tax ID #: 82-4876411
